Volunteers are the life-blood of the Friends of Newport Ship. Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, with differing skills and abilities assisting the project in various ways.
Whatever your interest, the project has many areas where you can help, from lending a hand to keep the Ship Centre clean and tidy to professional skills like public relations and business administration.
So whether you have a lot of time or only a little if you are interested in getting involved why not get in touch with us via contact us, details are on our contact us page.
Volunteer General
The Ship Centre is an industrial warehouse unit that houses the working Ship project. So as you can imagine being an active archaeology & conservation facility keeping it clean and tidy for our visitors requires everyone to lend a hand.
We have the displays and the cabin (our retail store) which needs active management to order and sell the merchandise. And from time to time DIY/handymen skills come in useful.
The charity itself needs administration skills, and the website requires updating and monitoring. Promotion and marketing are another important aspect in order to sustain interest and support for fundraising.
Volunteer Guides
Guides work at the Ship Centre meeting and taking visitors around the displays. Their role is to inform and inspire our visitors about the Ship, its discovery and history.
This role may suit someone who enjoys interacting with the general public and has an interest in medieval history and the Newport Ship.
Prior knowledge of the Ship and nautical archaeology are not essential, just a willingness to learn. New guides are given training by buddying with and mentoring from an experienced guide, organised by the lead volunteer.
The Ship Centre is open to the public Fridays, Saturdays and Bank Holiday Mondays during the season, which is March to end of October. We also run tours, by arrangement, of the Ship Centre for groups during the week and in the evening.
If you are interested or would like further information please contact Chair of the Friends, details are on our contact us page.
We would love to have you on board!
